    I have to go on the record as saying my hands did not touch this cake except to eat it. It was Christmas morning. I wasn’t feeling well. I had barely slept through the night and then I slept till almost 10am – something I haven’t done on Christmas morning since maybe I was a teenager. My mom made this cake. I supervised. And by supervised I mean I screamed, “WAIT! This is one of my weekly cakes, I have to photograph it!” while she finished the assembly.  (more…)

    We’ve all been in this position before. You’re home. You want some cake, but you don’t want to deal with the burden of a whole cake lurking in the kitchen. Cupcake? Nahh. Try mug cake! Have you heard of mug cake? A simple Google search or a browse through Pinterest will reveal single serving recipes of carrot cake, chocolate cake, vanilla cake, you name it.  (more…)


  3. Week 5: Coffee Cake

    It dawned on me after making this cake that the rules I set up for this project don’t really allow for me to take time to perfect a recipe. Because if the rules did allow me to perfect a recipe, this would be a recipe I’d want to perfect.

    I made this cake on a weeknight so I was looking for something quick and easy and I figured coffee cake would be a nice breakfast treat to have around. I looked up some recipes and found this one, but then took a good deal of creative license, adding Kahlua (you know, ’cause it’s coffee cake), buttermilk, and cake flour and doubling the crumb topping. I also baked in a springform pan, which also wasn’t in the original directions. (more…)
